Friday Night Film Series: Late Bloomers
Not Rated (2007) 90 mins. Switzerland's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film for the 2008 Academy Awards, Late Bloomers is a warm, wry, delightful comedy set in Trub, a village in the Emmental Valley in Switzerland's Berne canton. After mourning the death of her husband, 80 year old Martha, with the help of her friends, decides to turn the local corner shop into a chic lingerie boutique. But Martha lives in a small village and her son is the vicar. The most successful film in Swiss history serves as a refreshing reminder that life definitely does not end at retirement age. In German with English subtitles.

Friday Night Film Series: Strand, Under the Dark Cloth
Not Rated (1989) 89 mins. Although his influence on the history of photography has been nothing short of profound, Paul Strand (1890-1976) remains a curiously shrouded and paradoxical figure. While passionately devoted to humanity, he was happiest in the isolation of the darkroom. A pioneer filmmaker (Manhatta, Native Land, Heart of Spain, The Wave), he found the process of collaboration painful.

Strand established himself in New York in the 1920s as a master of light and structure, with his now famous photo of Wall Street inspired by the forms and movement of European modernist painters such as Matisse and Picasso. His close-up portraits and landscapes were equally profound.

John Walker's award winning Strand: Under the Dark Cloth is a documentary that is “beautifully crafted, thoroughly researched and intimately recounted” (Variety)
